Dad Return

After a month off of work for family leave I’m getting back to the work routine.

Little Brother has been all I could hope for: mostly quiet, mostly happy, and mostly asleep. He is still a handheld item so he gets most of my attention. On rare occasions that doesn’t go over well with Big Sister. Being second fiddle doesn’t suit her. To keep connected with her I try to include her in the activities I do to tend to the son, like diaper changing and feeding. That can be a bit tricky because asking for a two-year-old’s help is simply asking for trouble. For example, she will enthusiastically shove a silicone binkie entirely in Little Brother’s mouth to stop his crying. Technically it works for a few seconds so she gets an A for effort.

My son has recently cut his first teeth so he is drooling and compelled to gnaw on anything he can get his fat hands on. Holding him is like holding a 20-pound leech. He’s slimy and if you’re not paying attention, will latch on to any available part of you.

Another challenge I am facing is trying to get both kids to nap at the same time. I don’t think it’s possible, really. The kids have little sensors in them that detect when the other is asleep. At best I have had them napping simultaneously for ten minutes. That’s just enough time to prepare a meal and get settled on the couch before a sensor goes off.

Getting Back To It

So, now my wife and I are done with our family leave, and we’re returning to our regular working lives. Having the time off was great yet I am ready to get back to a routine. I may even fit in some more blog posts during that elusive “free time” everyone else seems to have.

Maybe I’ll get the kettle on and brew something. Blood oranges are available now so it’s time to boil up some of Dogfish Head’s Blood Orange Hefe. That one is a personal favorite.

Yeah, sure I will. Right after I get the kids down for a nap.
